Population
census is a prolonged photo-performance which brings the atmosphere of a
photographic studio to the streets of Baku. Over holidays and weekends,
Ibrahimova will photograph family groups on the boulevard which served
as a backdrop for family portraits for over a century. The tradition was
established by famous French photographer Alexandre Michon and even in
our digital age the family photograph is a timeless record of our
relationships.
Photography dating from before the revolution demonstrated the
fascinating synthesis between East and West through the clothing and
costumes of the period. The hand-produced prints are just as
atmospheric, if not more so, than photographs produced today using all
the latest technologies. The early photographic studios in Baku have
left an invaluable record of the entire social spectrum.
