Population census is a prolonged photo-performance which brings the atmosphere of a photographic studio to the streets of Baku. Over holidays and weekends, Ibrahimbayli will photograph family groups on the boulevard which served as a backdrop for family portraits for over a century. The tradition was established by famous French photographer Alexandre Michon and even in our digital age the family photograph is a timeless record of our relationships.
Photography dating from before the revolution demonstrated the fascinating synthesis between East and West through the clothing and costumes of the period. The hand-produced prints are just as atmospheric, if not more so, than photographs produced today using all the latest technologies. The early photographic studios in Baku have left an invaluable record of the entire social spectrum.
